The Collegio and the environment

The Collegio is committed to develop and maintain a sustainable and environmentally responsible way of working and minimizing waste.

Each of us can reduce the impact of the Collegio on the environment by adopting simple low-cost and even no-cost measures in each of the areas described below.

Energy

At the Collegio we know that the best solution is to reduce the use of energy and we are committed to reducing energy use and carbon emissions through:

  • minimizing the loss of energy in heating and cooling the building.
  • optimizing energy consumption in the various areas of the Collegio by improving the efficiency of the Collegio’s radiators and the heating plant.
  • using alternative energy sources: electricity is currently provided by the renewable energy sources certified by RECS (the Renewable Energy Certificate System).

Each of us can...

  • switch computers, monitors and equipment off when not in use or at least use the energy saving option (stand-by).
  • switch off the lights whenever you leave the office and ask us to reduce the temperature of the radiator in your office whenever your office is too hot or if you plan to be away from the Collegio for a certain period.
  • suggest actions and/or improvements to reduce the environmental impact of the Collegio in the area of Energy.

Recycling

At the Collegio we aim to change our procedures in order to reduce the use of disposable items and replace them with durable and compostable items through:

  • decreasing the use and waste of disposable plastic, especially at coffee breaks and lunch seminars.
  • buying recycled toner cartridges, and sending our used toner cartridges to be recycled. According to a study based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, this will reduce CO2 emissions by 50%.
  • considering alternative ways for disposing of packaging materials.
  • providing information about environmentally responsible practices: REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE
    http://www.covar14.it (Moncalieri)
    http://www.amiat.it (Torino)

Each of us can...

  • use the reusable shopping bag of the Collegio: ask the Reception for it (it's free)!
  • use a reusable mug for your coffee or tea.
    - at the reception desk, you can take a Collegio mug for the non-profit price of 50 cents
    - you can use your mug at the coffee machine.
  • print is energy-intensive, so print only pages we need.
    - print paper on both sides of the sheet.
    - download ECOFONT, that uses up to 20% less ink. Free to download, free to use. http://www.ecofont.eu/ecofont_en.html
    - instead of throwing away printed paper use the backs for making notes.
  • use the recycling containers properly to separate "plastic and cans" (orange container available throughout the building, please note: glasses are not recyclable plastic, please put only plastic bottles), "paper and tetrapak" (white or grey container, available in every room), and "organic" (container available only in the coffee break room). Use the dark container for Non Recyclable.
  • suggest actions and/or improvements to reduce the environmental impact of the Collegio in the area of Recycling.

Purchasing

At the Collegio, we are evaluating the purchases necessary for our activities with an eye towards the principles of environmental and social responsibility through:

  • the gradual replacement of plastic materials.
  • purchase of ecological paper brand FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), which identifies products containing wood from forests managed in a proper and responsible manner according to strict environmental standards, social and economic.
  • selection of printing and branding enterprises that use completely biodegradable, recyclable and environmentally friendly certificated paper, as FSC Forest Stewardship Council, SSF Selected Secondary Fibres, ECF Elemental Chlorine Freeprinting, and of office articles enterprises with ecological criteria.
  • ecolabel certification for hygienic products. The Ecolabel issued by the European Union certifies that these goods meet strict environmental criteria common to all countries of the European Union throughout their entire lifecycle.

Each of us can...

  • print is energy-intensive, so print only pages we need.
    - print paper on both sides of the sheet.
    - instead of throwing away printed paper use the backs for making notes.
    - use less colour in the paper and if possibile white backgrounds
  • use biodegradable materials carefully and responsibly, because their biodegradability should not be an incentive to greater consumption.
  • suggest actions and/or improvements to reduce the environmental impact of the Collegio in the area of Purchasing.

Commuting

At the Collegio, we understand the importance of reducing pollution from commuting:

  • we now have the bike racks available in the parking lot for secure parking of your bicycle.
  • we can provide information about the use of bicycles, public transportation and car-pooling:
cycling path maps in Turin. For those who bike there is a free bike repairs service available at CICLOFFICINABUS in Torino, via Bossoli 83, Tuesday to Thursday, 3:00 pm-7.00 pm (YEPP project, Youth Empowerment Partnership Programme, edited by Rainbow Association NPO)
    car-sharing
public transportation route maps and journey planners
    city maps

Each of us can...

  • let us know your route from home to work, so that we can co-ordinate car-pooling with those who live along the same route.
  • send us your ideas and suggestions for ways to make your commuting more cost-effective and energy-efficient. We can pass suggestions along to the municipality of Moncalieri, as well.
