The selection process consisted of two stages.

From November to December 2008, 393 economists in Italy, Europe, Israel, the United States, and Canada submitted their nominations by indicating their preferred Italian economist under 40.

The selection committee coordinated by Pietro Garibaldi (Director of the Collegio) has selected the winner. The members of the selection committee are:
