Carlo Alberto Medal 2025 awarded to NYU economist Giulia Brancaccio
We are proud to announce that Giulia Brancaccio has been awarded the 2025 Carlo Alberto Medal, a recognition presented every two years by Collegio Carlo Alberto to an Italian economist under the age of 40 for exceptional research in the field.
Currently an Associate Professor of Economics at NYU’s Stern School of Business, Brancaccio is a researcher in the field of Industrial Organization and Market Design. Her innovative work combines theoretical modeling with empirical analysis to explore inefficiency and policy interventions in decentralized markets, with a focus on sectors like transportation and finance.
A graduate of Bocconi University and Princeton University, Brancaccio has already published six papers in top-tier academic journals, including Econometrica, where her article “Geography, Search Frictions and Trade Costs” earned the Frisch Medal for the best applied paper on the journal.
In the words of some of the scholars who nominated her: Giulia “is an extremely insightful and productive applied economist, with a wide range of research interests.” Her “research is pushing the frontiers of industrial organization, with significant contributions to our understanding of spatial economics, search frictions in decentralized trade, and international trade.”
The Carlo Alberto Medal, established by the Collegio Carlo Alberto in 2007, highlights the achievements of young Italian economists who are making a global impact. The official award ceremony will be held in fall 2025 at the Collegio Carlo Alberto.
