“Structure and complexity of global insurers”
Abstract: We construct a novel dataset on the corporate structure of the top 100 global insurance groups with headquarters (HQ) located in 20 countries. For each insurance group, the dataset contains a complete corporate tree of majority subsidiaries. The subsidiaries are located in 117 countries and amount to around 8,000 firms. We analyse the structure and complexity of global insurance groups using the methodology by Cetorelli and Goldberg (2014) for global banks. We provide the first comprehensive analysis of the geographic and business focus of global insurance groups. We document how the level of internationalization and the business focus of foreign subsidiaries vary across HQ regions, as well as developed and emerging markets. We also evaluate the measures of business and geographic complexity of groups and analyse how they correlate with other insurers’ characteristics.
