Background
We are seeking to appoint a post-doc researcher to work with Prof. Tiziana Caponio (Principal Investigator, PI) in the project “Exploring the Integration of Post-2014 Migrants in Small and Medium-sized Towns and Rural Areas from a Whole of Community Perspective” (Whole-COMM), funded by the H2020 Programme, call SC6-MIGRATION-2020, Grant Agreement No: 101004714.

Whle-COMM is an international project lead by CCA in collaboration with FIERI in the context of the MiSTO Joint Research Unit. It will be carried out in the context of a Research Consortium formed by 11 international institutes: Universitat Fur Weiterbildung Krems (AT), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (BE), Technische Universitaet Chemnitz (DE), European University Institute (IT), Centre D’informacio I Documentacio Internacionals A Barcelona (ES), Uniwersytet Wroclawski (Pl), Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (Nl), Malmo Universitet (SE), Migration Policy Group (BE), Sabanci Universitesi (TR), York University (CA). The team led by Tiziana Caponio at CCA will coordinate the overall project in order to:

  1. To provide the overall theoretical framework underlying Whole-COMM empirical work-packages by specifying and further elaborating the analytical perspective to the study of immigrant integration policy and processes.
  2. To coordinate Whole-COMM methodology, from case selection to the various methods adopted in the research WPs.
  3. To provide an ongoing assessment of WPs’ research results with the aim of ensuring cross-exploitation of outcomes and strengthening communication and meaningful exchanges between the WPs.
  4. To provide an overall synthesis and systematization of the research results from the perspective of the project theoretical approach.

The appointed post-doc researcher will join a large international research team from all across Europe and beyond, and will have the chance to work on a research project that will break new ground in the field of immigrant integration policy and processes. This is, thus, a unique opportunity to build a career in migration studies. Collegio Carlo Alberto is a foundation created in 2004 as a joint initiative of the Compagnia di San Paolo and the University of Torino with the mission fostering research and high education in the social sciences, in accordance with the values and practices of the international academic community. It is located in Turin, one of the most vibrant Italian cities.

Job description
More specifically, the work will involve:

  1. Collaborating with the PI in conducting high quality research and contribute to the key project’s deliverables and high quality publications;
  2. Collaborating with the PI in all the activities linked to the scientific coordination of the Research Consortium (e.g. preparation of the research team meetings; organisation of shared folders and data repository; administration of email communications, overseeing the timeline etc.)
  3. Contributing to the systematisation of the research data collected by the Consortium and developing, together with the PI, comparative cross-country/cross-city analyses;
  4. Participating and contributing to the meetings of the research team;
  5. Collaborating in the assessment of research groups deliverables;
  6. Contributing to Whole-COMM dissemination initiatives, including participation to high level international conferences.

The post-doc researcher will also be encouraged and expected to develop his/her analyses on the basis of the research carried out and provide inputs throughout the development of the project.

Contract details
The contract is full-time starting as of 1st April 2021 and with a duration of 36 months. The place of work is CCA, Turin (Italy).

Type of contract: full-time temporary position for 3 years

Gross salary and contributions: 27,000 EUR gross annual salary; in line with University and CCA post-doc standards

Qualifications and competence
Essential

  • PhD in Political Science or Sociology, preferably with a thesis on migration studies
  • A postgraduate (MA/MSc) degree in any Social Science. Degrees directly giving access to a PhD programme in their home university system will be regarded as equivalent to an MA/MSc/MRes for the purposes of this job application.
  • Proficiency in English (active and passive use of the language) at C1 level.
  • Solid methodological competence in qualitative methods, preferably combined with expertise in quantitative methods
  • Proven ability to write up research findings.
  • Ability to take initiative, self-manage and contribute intellectually to the overall project.
  • Expertise with relevant office packages.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Desirable but not essential

  • Research experience in topics relating to migrant integration and/or migration policies as demonstrated, and/or publications on the topic.
  • Prior research experience in externally funded projects.
  • Basic knowledge of Italian language and/or other EU languages.
