Systematic Investing: AI and Data-Driven Decision Making

Alessandro Beber (Managing Director, Blackrock)

Introduction by Elisa Luciano (University of Turin and Collegio Carlo Alberto).

Alessandro Beber is Managing Director, Head of alpha research, in the Systematic Active Equity (SAE) team at Blackrock. In this capacity, he coordinates research that uses Artificial Intelligence and Alternative Data to create the alpha signals that power the Blackrock systematic funds. Before joining Blackrock in 2014, he was a professor of finance at Cass Business School and held visiting positions at leading institutions, including Wharton, Columbia, London Business School, and University of Lausanne. His academic research spans empirical asset pricing, market microstructure, and macro-finance, with numerous publications in top-tier finance journals.

Blackrock is the world’s largest asset manager, overseeing trillions in assets globally. Within its investment ecosystem, the Systematic Active Equity group develops model-based strategies that combine human insight with advanced data analytics. In this lecture, Alessandro Beber explores how artificial intelligence and data-driven models are reshaping the landscape of systematic investing. Offering a behind-the-scenes look at how BlackRock’s systematic team develops investment research, this lecture provides valuable insight into the future of investing, where data, algorithms, and human intuition converge to drive better decisions in increasingly complex financial markets.
