The rise of dominant firms with extensive market power is a global phenomenon. There is momentum in policy to reign in the market power through legislative action. The European Parliament has taken the lead with two new sweeping pieces of legislation on digital industries (the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act), and American policymakers are taking a close look. It remains to be seen whether lobbying by digital firms will be able to minimize the impact of this regulation, which risks lowering their monopoly profits substantially.

L’ascesa di imprese dominanti con un ampio potere di mercato è un fenomeno globale. La politica si sta muovendo per arginare il potere di mercato attraverso l’azione legislativa. Il Parlamento Europeo ha preso l’iniziativa con due nuovi provvedimenti per le industrie digitali (il Digital Markets Act e il Digital Services Act), mentre la politica americana osserva con attenzione. Resta da vedere quanto il lobbying e la resistenza delle aziende digitali saranno in grado di minimizzare l’impatto di queste normative che rischiano di ridurre sostanzialmente i loro profitti monopolistici.
