The world is in a funk. Slow average income growth over many years has caused many Western citizens to believe their economic prospects will be worse than their parents. Their anger has fed authoritarian movements eroding our liberal democracies from the
inside, just as they are threatened militarily from the outside. Yet, decline isn’t fate. Environmentally sustainable and socially equitable growth is achievable. A new Growth Plan should be centered around long-term investing in knowledge, people and infrastructure, coupled with radical changes in our institutions and politics.

Il mondo è in crisi. La bassa crescita del reddito medio per molti anni ha portato una buona parte dei cittadini occidentali a credere che le loro prospettive economiche saranno peggiori di quelle dei loro genitori. La loro rabbia ha alimentato movimenti autoritari che stanno erodendo le nostre democrazie liberali dall’interno, così come sono minacciate militarmente dall’esterno. Tuttavia il declino non è un destino inesorabile. Una crescita sostenibile dal punto di vista ambientale e socialmente equa è possibile. Un nuovo piano di crescita dovrebbe essere incentrato su investimenti a lungo termine in conoscenza, persone e infrastrutture, insieme a cambiamenti radicali nelle nostre istituzioni e nella politica.
