D-sustainability: The new imperative for a digital and sustainable world

Abstract. Unlike past technological revolutions, digital transformation comes at a time of profound interdependent challenges including global warming, migration, an aging population, and new geopolitical tensions. It will cause great stress on our economic, social and political systems, creating some preconditions for sustainability, but undermining others. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the interlinkages between digital transformation and sustainable development, and the contextual factors that can maximise the benefits and minimise the risks of ‘going digital’. It traces the history of the sustainability paradigm and the emergence of a digital ecosystem, highlighting the similarities but especially the differences from the technological changes of the past. The paper also addresses how policy and the scientific community can contribute to a world that is both digital and sustainable.
